This is a self-paced, asynchronous course. This course will highlight best practices Career Navigators can employ to encourage retention and persistence in students, especially those facing barriers. Trainees will reflect on common barriers and challenges faced by adult education students before exploring strategies to address them using both internal program resources and engaging with outside partners who provide specialized services. Training content and activities highlight ways to adopt a student-centered, holistic approach to address barriers appropriately. Trainees will be encouraged to develop a comprehensive network of regional agencies and organizations that can provide specialized support to students to effectively address barriers. Technology-based skills needed to access information quickly and efficiently and to complete timely referrals to community partners will be integrated throughout the course.
Target Audience:
Adult Education Career Navigators, Career Counselors, Academic Advisors and professionals who will be providing career and academic coaching services to adult education students.
Learning Objectives:
By the completion of this professional development offering, trainees should be able to:
- Discuss strategies and best practices that increase student persistence and retention.
- Describe common barriers and challenges faced by adult education students.
- Identify potential referral sources/partners to address student barriers.
- Assess crisis situations to determine appropriate interventions to support students.
- Create regional resources list.
- Develop a strategy to build collaborative partnerships with community organizations to support students.
Duration:
5 hours (asynchronous instruction)
After meeting the requirements of this course, participants may be eligible to receive 5 hours of Continuing Education (SCECH) Credits that will fulfill the state licensure requirement for either teachers or counselors.
