Full course description

Across the modules, educators will explore strategies such as using pop culture, incorporating digital tools, encouraging storytelling, strengthening instruction through games, supporting pronunciation with rhythm, and scaffolding meaning with visual supports. Together, these approaches support vocabulary development, listening comprehension, speaking fluency, pronunciation, and overall learner engagement.

Designed to be flexible and efficient, this microlearning toolkit fits easily into busy instructional schedules. Whether you teach adult ESL, ESOL, workforce-focused language programs, or integrated education and training, you will leave each module with ready-to-use routines and activities that can be applied immediately in the classroom.

By the completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain how pop culture materials can be used to support vocabulary development and listening comprehension and identify one way to apply them in instruction.

  • Integrate a digital tool into a short instructional routine that increases English learners’ engagement or language output.

  • Identify a quick storytelling technique that promotes speaking and listening practice, and evaluate how it contributes to learner fluency.

  • Select a simple, low-prep language-learning game to increase learner engagement and verbal practice.

  • Incorporate rhythm-based strategies from music or poetry to help learners practice stress, intonation, and natural speech patterns.

  • Choose appropriate visual supports, including images, emojis, picture sequences, or infographics, to scaffold meaning and strengthen learners’ vocabulary or comprehension.
