Healing Trauma in Ourselves and Our Schools: An Introduction to the HCRE Approach
Self-paced
Full course description
Challenges like climate change, institutionalized racism, gun violence, and traumatic stress exposure are interconnected, increasingly common, and a part of the landscape that teachers, administrators, and school environments are managing. Tools like Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) and Restorative Practices (RP) help, but are still leaving teachers overwhelmed, burned out, and exiting the education system at incredibly high rates. This training workshop begins to answer the question: how do we shift our practices to adapt? This training introduces the Healing Centered Restorative Engagement approach and discusses how this can be used in the classroom to build a healing culture and inclusive community that allows for a proactive response to the needs of everyone in a classroom. This workshop highlights the 9 HCRE Principles and shows how these can be used in our day-to-day practice as educators, such as with check-ins, affective statements, and restorative questions. It will also discuss how safe spaces can be created in the classroom. This workshop is facilitated by the creators of the Healing Centered Restorative Engagement (HCRE) approach, Drs. Hall and Camp, along with culture-change expert Kimberly Burton.
By the end of this training, participants should be able to:
- Define different types of trauma and toxic stress and identify how it can present in individual behaviors.
- Describe the Healing Centered Restorative Engagement approach.
- Identify Healing Centered Restorative Engagement practices and methods.
